The Perfect Margarita

Look no further, you have found the recipe for the perfect margarita. I love this cocktail more than any other cocktail. In fact, I love anything even remotely associated with or related to Mexican Food and it’s accompanying beverages. If you need proof, please see my recipe for Totally Awesome Guacamole and Taco Pie (with more recipes of Mexican fare favorites soon to come, I am sure).

While riding out a hurricane a couple of years ago, I set out to concoct the perfect Margarita. Yes, we celebrate hurricanes in this family as long as it is at a category 3 or below… my husband is a little crazy.

For some reason, I thought “perfect” meant it needed to be made from tequila and nothing other than freshly squeezed citrus. What I came up with was pretty darn good, don’t get me wrong, but the manual labor that went into expressing the juice from the limes and oranges and cleaning up the mess that went along with it was too much for this somewhat lazy cook.

Then, a friend introduced me to this simple and delicious recipe shortly after that and I haven’t looked back since.

What you will need:

  • A glass big enough to hold 1 cup of liquid, 1 lime wedge, 1 orange wedge and plenty of ice
  • 1/3 cup Silver tequila (Hornitos Plata was used in this post)
  • 2/3 cup Simply Limeade
  • 1 to 2 tsp of agave nectar
  • 1-2 lime wedges
  • 1-2 navel orange wedges
  • Kosher salt or sugar to salt or sugar the rim (optional)

Ingredients (minus the Kosher Salt)

Start by cutting up your citrus into wedges (approx 6 to 8 per lime and orange).

Next, salt or sugar the rim of your glass. I used a 12 oz mason jar because apparently no beverage can be served or photographed for Pinterest any longer unless it is in a mason jar. Let’s face it, they are pretty cute and it is rather fun drinking out of them.

I prefer to use Kosher Salt. Pour Kosher salt (or table sugar) out onto a small plate. Take one lime wedge and glide it along the rim of the glass you are using, gently pushing down as you go. Next, dip the rim of the glass in the salt (or sugar) and press down.

Afterwards, fill your glass up with plenty of ice, maybe 2/3 of the way full with ice.

Drizzle 1 to 2 tsp of agave nectar over the ice.

Squeeze in one lime wedge and one orange wedge and drop the wedge into the glass.

Measure out 1/3 cup of silver tequila and then 2/3 cup Simply Limeade (shake Simply Limeade really good before measuring it out).

Pour tequila and Simply Limeade mixture into the glass with ice, agave and citrus. I recommend dumping the mixture with the ice back and forth a few times from measuring cup to glass or dumping into a cocktail shaker and shaking really well to blend the flavors. Or just give it a good stir!

And there you have it, folks! If you are wondering where my salted rim went, I forgot to do it at the beginning and went back and added that step later. If you accidentally do the same, just go without it or glide a lime wedge around the rim and rub some Kosher salt on with your finger as you can see I did in the picture below.

YUMMMMMM!

Let me know if you try it and what you think!
