My youngest son recently turned 5 and, for months, had been requesting a Pokemon themed birthday party. His list of must-haves was fairly short: he wanted brownies instead of cake (whatever, man), he wanted a pinata and he wanted the fiesta to be at our house so his friends could swim in the pool.

While searching online and in stores for Pokemon party decorations, party favors and pinata fillers, I came across some white paper lanterns and thought man, I bet I could easily turn those into Pokeballs and use them as a unique decoration.

And so, I got to work.

What I used and what you’ll need:

  • 10 inch white paper lanterns (or any size will do)
  • Red tempera paint (I used the Crayola washable kind we already had)
  • A sponge brush or larger paint brush
  • Black, electrical tape
  • White and black construction paper or card stock
  • A tapered cup to trace the larger and smaller circles
  • Scissors
  • Scotch Tape

Step 1

Assemble white lanterns and paint the top half of them red. Eyeball where the middle of the ball would be and paint up from there. I set mine into a candle holder so it would not roll around while I was painting.

The line dividing the red and the white does not need to be absolutely perfect and there will be some discrepancy at the end as the wires giving the lantern it’s shape spiral down.

Not to worry, however, as the black electrical tape will cover up where the red meets the white.

Let dry completely.

Step 2

Take your tapered cup and trace as many larger black and smaller white circles for the number of Pokeballs you plan to make.

Cut them out and tape the white circle on top of and in the middle of the black circle. Also add two or three loops of tape to the back of the black circle to stick to the Pokeball later.

Step 3

Take the black electrical tape and slowly wrap it around the lantern being certain to cover up the line where red paint meets white paint. There is no need to wrap tightly, offer just enough pressure to have the tape adhere to the paper lantern.

Step 4

With the 2 or 3 loops of scotch tape on the back, adhere the black and white Pokeball center (the circles) where the ends of the electrical tape come together.

Viola! Your creation is ready to hang!

Time to party!
